History of the Institute of Public Health of Serbia

May 13th, 1919 - The Ministerial Commission for Epidemiology

organized by the Ministry of Health was established for the territory of

the Kingdom of the Serbs, Croats and Slovens in order to perform the

hygienic surveillance of the communicable diseases. The first Head of

this Commission was Dr Milan Jovanovic Batut.

1922-1923 - The Bacteriological Station, Laboratories for Tropical

Diseases and Institute of Social Medicine were established in Belgrade,

exemplifying the nucleus of the future Central Institute of Hygiene.

1924 - The Central Institute of Hygiene was established.

1945 - After the WW II, the following Institutions were founded in

the facilities of the Central Institute of Hygiene: The Federal Institute

of Epidemiology, The Federal Institute of Hygiene and The Institute of

Bacteriology and Epidemiology of the Republic of Serbia.

1951 - The Institute of Hygiene of the People’s Republic of Serbia was

founded.

1961 - The Institute of Hygiene of the PR Serbia was transformed into

the Institute of Health Care, at the same time functioning as the Republic

Health Center.

1979 - The Institute changed its name into Institute of Health Protection

named after “Dr Milan Jovanovic Batut”.

1997 - The Institute of Health Protection “Dr Milan Jovanovic Batut”

was upgraded in accordance with the current Law on Health Care.

2006 - In accordance with the Law on Health Care of the Republic of

Serbia, the Institute was transformed into the Institute of Public Health

of Serbia “Dr Milan Jovanovic Batut”.
